Phone in the River, the debut EP by Jen Frank, is a collection of songs full of pop hooks and lush instrumentation produced by Craig Pilkington (The Killjoys) at Audrey Studios.
With songs ranging from scorching ballads through toe-tapping pop-rock to playful country-pop, Jen Frank is an accomplished singer-songwriter from Melbourne, Australia. Jen tackles some challenging & topical issues with a quirky, tongue in cheek attitude, covering personal and social commentary, including love & loss, bullying, body image, social media, fun times and ageing. Having played at dozens of venues across Melbourne including Memo Music Hall, Wesley Anne and Bar 303, Jen is an experienced performer and dynamic vocalist.
In 2011, Jen began to develop mental health issues. This experience helped her to understand some of the challenges she faced in life and helped her to connect with and commit to her passion as a creator and performer of original music. In 2012, Jen joined Wild At Heart Community Arts, an organisation that supports musicians with lived experience of disability to produce original music, and has since played a leading role in organising events, including the Unmuted Festival for artists with mental illness, and the Lyrical Women songwriting program for women and non-binary identifying artists.
Opening title track Phone In The River is a quirky take on the trials of social media and how kicking the habit could be good for your mental health. Lead single Those Butterflies is a shimmering pop tune that muses on “the moment when you notice somebody in the room, you get butterflies and hormones overload your brain”, says Jen.
Saved Me the Trouble is empowering and humorous take on how someone’s true colours are shown at the end of a relationship, with the chorus chanting “what the heck, you dumped me via text, you saved me the trouble”. The mood shifts for a moment with Regrettable Circumstance, a melodic heartbreak song which highlight’s Jen’s ability to move the jokes aside and clear way for vulnerability. The vibrance then comes back two-fold with The Song Goes Woah, a fun song about dancing in the street while listening to the radio, followed by EP closer Typical, where Jen questions the cycle of repetitive mistakes made in relationship choices.
Thanks to – Phil Heuzenroeder, Charles Jenkins, Craig Pilkington, Jun Bin Lee, Joanna Jones, Bee Hatfield, John Fleming, Tristan Goodall (rip) and my many Wild At Heart mentors & friends, without whom this EP would not have been made. Also love and thanks to Ron, Merrilyn, Robyn, and to my biggest fans – my mum & dad, Harri and Sue, who have encouraged and supported my artistic endeavours throughout my life.
